A Cloud of Outrageous Blue is a beautiful ode to the complexity and richness of color, and of people that see them as something more than just color. We follow a girl with synesthesia in the middle ages who has been orphaned and then abandoned by her brother to a priory where at first everything is great, she's allowed to work with inks and pigments, and the boy she loved shows up, orphaned himself. But fate has other things in mind for her, and this world has been known to suffer when it's people don't remember the Well. It's beautifully written, and beautifully illustrated, and taught me about something I hadn't really known much about before, allowing me to understand a facet of humanity that had been relatively closed to me before. This'll be one I hand to all ages, middle school and up!
