Staycation Stories

STAYCATION STORIES

As summer approaches, let's embark on a mission to ignite the joy of reading in children at SIXTEEN Elementary Schools. Join us as we bring no-cost book fairs to these Title 1 schools where children can shop for three books to take home for the summer!

The summer presents a golden opportunity to nourish young minds with the magic found within the pages of books. Let’s support every child’s access to these adventures through STAYCATION STORIES – a partnership between WSFCS, Bookmarks, and Love Literacy to build summer libraries in the homes of our students.

WHY?
Why is summer reading so crucial?

  • Summer reading combats the dreaded "summer slide" – the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the break.
  • Encouraging children to read during the summer months helps them maintain and even improve their literacy skills, ensuring they return to school ready to excel.

Why is reading about more than academics?

  • Reading opens doors to empathy, creativity, and understanding.
  • Reading fosters a love of learning that can last a lifetime. By investing in summer reading, we're investing in the future of our community.

Let's make this summer a season of endless possibilities for our children. Together, we can build a brighter future, one book at a time. Thank you for joining us on this inspiring journey!

WHO:
We are beginning this project with elementary schools because we hope to start with our youngest readers in the hopes of creating an excitement and joy in them to continue reading throughout their lives! The elementary schools we will be reaching through no-cost book fairs are:

  • Ashley
  • Bolton
  • Cook
  • Diggs-Latham
  • Easton
  • Forest Park
  • Gibson
  • Hall-Woodward
  • Ibraham
  • Kimberley Park
  • Konnoak
  • Mineral Springs
  • North Hills
  • Old Town
  • Petree
  • South Fork

All students at these schools will be given the opportunity to experience a book fair that has been curated to reflect the beautiful diversity that exists within our community and schools. K-5 students will be able to shop for three books with the guidance of volunteers. Through choice, the students will be excited about reading their new books. Enrollment at these 16 schools totals 7,127 students.

Here's how you can help:

Our goal for this project is $94,000, which will allow each of the students in all 16 schools to select three books. This equals approximately $13.20 per student!
