Summer Reading 2017

BOOKMARKS 2017 SUMMER READING WINNERS

Bookmarks announced the winners of their 2017 Summer Reading Program on Saturday, September 9 at Saturday’s Opening Ceremony in Winston Square Park on their third day of their Festival of Books and Authors. K–12 students across North Carolina were invited to participate with written, visual, and video responses to books on Bookmarks Summer Reading list, which included North Carolina standard reading lists, Battle of the Books lists, American Library Association winners and, of course, 2017 featured Bookmarks’ Festival authors.

“Participation in our Summer Reading Program is growing each year,” said Rachel Kuhn Stinehelfer, Education and Program Specialist for Bookmarks. “This year, we received contributions from 29 schools and 9 counties across North Carolina. One of the important things about this program is that it keeps students reading during the summer, which is essential for success in school.”

The winners are broken into three age groups:  K–2, 3–5, and Middle and High School and three categories:  visual (arts), written (letters), and video. A new award was given this year, Best In Show, for the best entry overall. Elementary aged students won Bookmarks’ gift certificates, middle and high school received monetary prizes, and Whitaker Elementary School, as the school that had the most participants in the program, received five signed books by 2017 Festival authors for their library.
